Last year, I inherited this adorable vintage pattern from a friend who was cleaning out her stash.  So, so cute.  Older patterns only come in one size, so I had to wait and wait and wait for Penny to grow enough to fit into a size 2.

going to school

Looking at the pattern, one of my first thoughts was that it looked very Japanese school girlish.  (Ok, so my husband watches a lot of anime…and he may have been in the anime club in high school….)

So I then thought “hey, my child looks Asian….sort of….I’ll make her a Japanese-style school dress!”  After all, Vietnam is only….2,700 miles from Japan, and their cultures are…..totally different…

I decided on this fabric since it looked anime style…at least to me anyway…using Ni Hao, Kai-Lan as my reference point.  I’m so cultured, I know-haha.

Here’s how it turned out.  I think the blue bow (per my husband’s recommendation) was the icing on the cake, although it does look a bit large.  Penny is ready for school!  (Maybe after learning to walk, that is.)
